It’s day 54 of sharing my daily walks online.

I’ve been listening to a playlist from the 1972 vinyl of Billie Holiday’s greatest hits during my daily walks. One track that stands out is ‘He’s Funny That Way.’

Recorded in the 1930s, this song emerged when the U.S. government was trying to alleviate the Great Depression with garden programs.

Yet many black sharecroppers, who faced severe exploitation, saw little benefit. As someone who grows 90 percent of my own produce, I’m intrigued by how gardening was affected back then.

Holiday’s ‘He’s Funny That Way’ captures both struggle and hope, reflecting an era when radio offered much-needed entertainment.

Her rendition of this love song is deeply moving.

I rate ‘He’s Funny That Way’ 9 out of 10 for its heartfelt and witty take on love. I wonder if my elders, who lived through those times, felt the same way about this song.

Songs like ‘He’s Funny That Way’ remind us of music’s enduring power through history.
